For more than 186 years, Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia has stood as a pillar of faith, worship, and community transformation. Established in 1840, the congregation traces its origins to free men and women of color who gathered in pursuit of spiritual freedom and a deeper relationship with God during a defining period in American history. The church was formally recognized by the Portsmouth Baptist Association, becoming one of the earliest and most influential African American Baptist churches in Norfolk, VA.

Rooted in a legacy of perseverance, Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church has continuously evolved while remaining committed to biblical teaching, prayer, worship, and serving the Norfolk community beyond the sanctuary walls. After more than a century on historic Bank Street, the congregation relocated to its current home on Chesapeake Boulevard, expanding its ability to serve future generations while preserving its historic mission.

Today, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Joseph P. Lee Jr., the church’s 17th Senior Pastor, Bank Street continues to emphasize the importance of combining faith with practical service to the community. Since accepting the pastoral call at Bank Street in 2008, Rev. Dr. Lee has championed outreach initiatives, welcomed more young families into the congregation, and reinforced the belief that the 21st-century church must actively serve the needs of its surrounding community. A scholar, songwriter, educator, and ministry leader, Rev. Dr. Lee holds multiple theological degrees—including a Doctor of Ministry—and remains active in regional ministerial organizations focused on spiritual leadership and community engagement.
